Love on Track:
Ballads & Beyond

George Harris-All About Jazz-March 2005

Countless old movies had the worn line, "We could have made beautiful music together." Here's a rare combo: a husband and wife duo that does just that. With husband Denny in the background on keyboards, Susan lends her warm, autumnal voice to a wide variety of standards from the '40s and '60s.

With perfect pitch and crystal clear intonation Susan Berthiaume caresses ballads with delicacy. On "Something Cool" (with Noel Jewkes' sumptuous tenor), "Losing My Mind," and "Nature Boy/Shadow of Your Smile," her confident and auburn vocals envelop the words, placing them as works of art in themselves to be admired. On the uptempo "What Am I Here For?" and "Lover Come Back to Me," she is quick, punctuated, smirky and streetwise. Bop is in good hands with her.

Like every good husband, Denny brings out the best in his wife, using piano and keyboards as suitable backdrops throughout the recording. All in all, Love on Track is an enjoyable musical endorsement of matrimonial bliss.

Robert Bernard - former lecturer of Voice Stanford University and vocal coach of 20 years to Joan Baez

As a teacher of singing for over 40 years including many years at Stanford University, I have had the opportunity to work with numberless outstanding talents. Susan's voice is top most on my list. Not only is she supreme on this CD, the supporting instrumentalists are stunning. Start with Denny Berthiaume at the piano; Infinitely inventive and rhythmically subtle, he must be a once in a lifetime collaborator. The other instrumentalists add magic to the whole experiRobert Bernard - former lecturer of Voice Stanford University and vocal coach of 20 years to Joan Baez
